2025 BYD Shark 6 price and specs: Plug-in hybrid ute on sale now

BYD’s hotly-awaited electrified ute has gone on sale, with a price pegged to take it to market leaders Ford and Toyota.

The 2025 BYD Shark 6 plug-in hybrid ute has gone on sale, priced from $57,900 before on-road costs.

The highly-anticipated Shark 6 from the Chinese brand – which formally launched in Australia in 2022 with its Atto 3 small SUV – will be offered in just one model grade initially.

The BYD ute’s competitive price will see it match up with the RRPs of mid-tier rivals from Ford, Toyota, Isuzu, Nissan, and Mitsubishi – but with a longer list of equipment, and petrol-electric plug-in hybrid tech delivering more power than a Ranger Raptor.

The plug-in hybrid ute is set to take on the Ford Ranger PHEV due next year.

The $57,900 price tag is similar to mid-grade diesel dual-cabs such as the Ford Ranger XLS Bi-Turbo (from $57,630), Isuzu D-Max X-Rider (from $59,500), Mazda BT-50 XTR (from $59,280), Mitsubishi Triton GLS (from $59,090), Nissan Navara ST-X (from $58,945), and Toyota HiLux SR5 manual ($60,670).

Just one black interior trim can be had, though there are three exterior paint choices from launch – Atlantis Grey, Arctic White and Cosmos Black, while Outback Orange will join the options list in 2025.

As standard, the Shark 6 comes with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a rotating 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, digital radio, and in-built satellite navigation – as well as key safety technology such as a surround-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, seven airbags, and a driver fatigue monitor.

Powering the Shark 6 is a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine, paired with two electric motors – one on each axle – and a 29.6kWh battery pack.

The BYD Shark 6 has been tested on local soil to make sure it is suitable for Australian conditions.

BYD claims that makes for a combined output of 321kW and 650Nm, a quoted 0-100km/h acceleration time of 5.7 seconds, an 840km hybrid petrol-electric range, and a 100km electric-only driving range.

This not only makes the Shark 6 the most potent model in its class, but also the quickest accelerating on paper, outplaying even the $90,440 Ford Ranger Raptor and its 292kW/583Nm 3.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V6.

Combined fuel-economy is rated at 2.0L/100km, though only when the battery is in a high state of charge.

Using a 7kW AC charger, the Shark 6’s battery can be topped up from 30-80 per cent in two hours, while a 55kW DC fast charger needs 25 minutes to add the same amount of energy.

BYD quotes a 0-100 time of 5.7 seconds, making the Shark 6 faster than a Ford Ranger Raptor.

As the Shark 6 is a PHEV, there are also vehicle-to-load (V2L) capabilities, with three full-sized power outlets in the tray and one inside the cabin which allow the high-voltage battery to power external electrical devices such as power tools or appliances.

Having been tested on local roads to meet Australian conditions, the Shark 6 features a 790kg payload rating and a 2500kg braked towing capacity – though it falls short of the segment standards of near-one-tonne, and 3500kg respectively.

Deliveries are expected to commence in the coming weeks, well ahead of the end of the Fringe Benefits Tax exemption for new plug-in hybrid vehicles in novated leases.

The 2025 BYD Shark 6 is on sale now, with deliveries to commence in December/January.
