<strong>Volkswagen Golf<\/strong> is set to return to electric power when the next-generation model is launched towards the end of the decade, Volkswagen passenger cars CEO Thomas Sch\u00e4fer has confirmed.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"blocks_drive-block__wrapper__nDI7m\"><span class=\"paragraph_drive-paragraph-block__03kVn\"><\/p>\n<p>It quashes rumours the long-running <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drive.com.au\/showrooms\/volkswagen\/golf\/\">Golf<\/a> \u2013 one of Europe&#8217;s top-selling cars, and now in its eighth generation \u2013 could be axed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drive.com.au\/showrooms\/volkswagen\/\">Volkswagen<\/a> in favour of the company\u2019s similarly-conceived <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drive.com.au\/tag\/volkswagen-id-3\/\">ID.3<\/a> electric car.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"blocks_drive-block__wrapper__nDI7m\"><span class=\"paragraph_drive-paragraph-block__03kVn\"><\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the 2022 Los Angeles motor show, Mr Sch\u00e4fer said he sees scope for a future electric version of the Golf to co-exist with the ID.3, despite the existing models being close on size, positioning and pricing.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<hr class=\"blocks_drive-block__ad__hr__Ifhs_\" style=\"height:0\"\/>\n<hr class=\"blocks_drive-block__ad__hr__Ifhs_\" style=\"height:0\"\/>\n<div class=\"blocks_drive-block__wrapper__nDI7m\"><span class=\"paragraph_drive-paragraph-block__03kVn\"><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ID.3 has if he considered there was room for both models in the Volkswagen model line-up, Mr Sch\u00e4fer said, \u201cYes\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"blocks_drive-block__wrapper__nDI7m\"><span class=\"paragraph_drive-paragraph-block__03kVn\"><\/p>\n<p>Mr Sch\u00e4fer confirmed Volkswagen is currently weighing up options for its existing petrol- and diesel-engined models, many of which have existed for decades and carry highly identifiable names, as the company sets its sights on going electric in selected markets, including Europe, by 2033.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<hr class=\"blocks_drive-block__ad__hr__Ifhs_\" style=\"height:0\"\/>\n<hr class=\"blocks_drive-block__ad__hr__Ifhs_\" style=\"height:0\"\/>\n<div class=\"blocks_drive-block__wrapper__nDI7m\"><span class=\"paragraph_drive-paragraph-block__03kVn\"><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have iconic names like Golf and GTI. It would be crazy to let them die.
