A diversified line-up will better position the 2026 GWM Cannon ute against key rivals like the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux.

China’s GWM will diversify its Cannon ute into three distinct streams to better tackle the market-dominating Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux, as revealed at this year’s Guangzhou motor show.

The three avenues will target on-road comfort, off-roading, and commercial applications, respectively, giving the Cannon direct ammunition to aim at the Ranger Platinum, Wildtrak, and XLT, respectively.

To make the passenger-oriented Cannon more distinct, GWM has added more in-cabin technologies such as the latest Coffee OS 3 software for its infotainment unit.

Meanwhile, the more adventure-ready version of the Cannon features a BorgWarner-sourced four-wheel-drive system with three differential locks and beefed-up underbody protection.

The off-road-focused Cannon also wears a distinct look with a snorkel, 18-inch wheels with all-terrain rubber, side steps, and a steel front bumper.

The workhorse-oriented Cannon also boasts unique styling, which includes extra front lighting and a unique front fascia, while the ute’s stability systems have been updated to improve anti-roll and hill-descent control.

In China, the Cannon powertrains available include a mix of petrol and diesel options, but in Australia only the latter is available.

The 2.0-litre turbo-diesel produces 120kW/400Nm locally, while the 2.4-litre engine ups outputs to 135kW/480Nm.

It remains unclear if and when the new versions of the Cannon ute will make it to local showrooms.
