The all-new Elgrand people mover previews technologies set to filter across the wider Nissan range, including the next X-Trail SUV.

Nissan has unveiled its fourth-generation Elgrand people mover for the Japanese market, 15 years after the previous model first debuted.

Due on sale in Japan in 2026, the new Nissan Elgrand previews technologies set to filter across the brand’s model range, including its next-generation e-Power hybrid and e-4orce all-wheel-drive systems.

However, like previous versions of the Elgrand and other premium Japanese people movers, such as the Toyota Alphard, the new model is unlikely to be offered in Australian Nissan showrooms.

The new model features Nissan’s ‘Timeless Japanese Futurism’ design language, with its individual lighting elements at the front previewing the look of the next X-Trail SUV expected to debut in 2026.

New features include dual 14.3-inch displays for its infotainment system and instrument cluster, similar to the new Patrol Y63, as well as a 22-speaker Bose audio system and 64-colour ambient lighting.

Under the skin, the Elgrand will be exclusively powered by Nissan’s third-generation e-Power petrol-electric hybrid system, which debuted in the Qashqai in Europe earlier this year, ahead of its Australian launch next year.

With a modular, five-in-one electric powertrain, Nissan says the latest-generation system offers “refined performance, quieter operation, and improved fuel efficiency”.

The new Elgrand also debuts Nissan’s updated e-4orce electric all-wheel-drive system, which it claims offers handling improvements, better stability, and suppressed pitching from rear electric-motor torque.

It is said to provide “a smooth, comfortable ride for passengers and reducing the likelihood of carsickness,” with the new e-4orce system also likely for the next-generation X-Trail.

In Japan, the Elgrand is Nissan’s flagship model along with its Skyline sedan, positioned above the smaller Serena, Caravan and NV200 minivans.

It is a rival for the Toyota Alphard and Vellfire twins, as well as the Mitsubishi Delica, all of which are not offered in Australia, though Mitsubishi Australia has expressed interest in a new-generation Delica due soon.

However, the models are popular in Australia as private ‘grey imports’, which allows the vehicles to be imported from Japan and driven on Australian roads if they are on the Federal Government’s Specialist and Enthusiast Vehicles (SEVs) register.
