Not all states and territories get a public holiday this weekend, but for some of those that do there will be the chance of copping double demerit points for infringements.
Double demerit points will apply for breaking certain road rules from tonight, as states and territories across Australia gear up for a long weekend.
With many jurisdictions set to enjoy a three-day public holiday weekend for Labour Day (NSW, ACT, NT, SA) and the King’s Birthday (QLD), police and motoring groups are warning drivers to stick to the rules or face twice the demerits that usually apply.
Double demerit points will come into effect for four days from midnight (12:00 am) 4 October to 11:59 pm 7 October in New South Wales (NSW) and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT).
In the ACT one additional point will also be added for more minor offences such as failing to keep left.
For example, any driver caught using their mobile phone will be hit with a $410 fine and add 10 demerit points to their licence.
During double demerit periods, motorists can be slugged with double points for speeding, illegal use of mobile phones, not wearing a seatbelt and riding without a motorcycle helmet.
While the fines may be hefty, only the points are doubled during these periods. But if you reach your demerit point limit, your licence can be suspended.
The specific enhanced penalty period will not apply in Victoria, Western Australia or Tasmania as they do not have a public holiday this weekend.
While Victoria celebrated the AFL Grand Final public holiday on 27 September, it does not enforce double demerit points as standard practice.
In Queensland, double demerits are in effect all year-round, but only for drivers who commit the same offence twice in the space of 12 months.
This applies for speeding more than 20km/h over the limit, as well as mobile phone, seatbelt and motorcycle helmet offences.
The National Roads and Motorists’ Association (NRMA) is advising those travelling to drive safely and take extra care on the roads to protect yourself, loved ones and all road users.
The organisation is also reminding drivers that additional penalties can also apply for certain offences committed in school zones.
Meanwhile, NSW Police said it will have officers out in force for ‘Operation Labour Day 2024’ where it will be targeting drink- and drug-driving, fatigue, mobile phone use, and speeding, as well as seatbelt and helmet offences.
“We want everyone to enjoy their long weekend with their friends and family, so we are urging all motorists to plan and prepare for their trips, no matter how long they may be,” Acting Assistant Commissioner David Driver said.
“This means not driving while you are tired, taking breaks on long trips, driving to the conditions and not getting behind the wheel if you have been drinking alcohol, have taken illicit drugs or are impaired in any way.”
Last weekend Victoria Police also launched a long weekend-focused initiative, with Operation Scoreboard emphasising a zero-tolerance approach to drivers affected by alcohol and drugs over the state’s long weekend.
