Chery Australia does not believe increasing its warranty period will have a tangible effect on drawing customer attention to the brand, despite rivals such as MG, Nissan, and Mitsubishi offering a 10-year assurance period.

While the industry average offered by the likes of Toyota, Ford, and Mazda is a five-year/unlimited kilometre warranty, Chery vehicles are backed by a seven-year/unlimited kilometre period – matching that of Kia, GWM, Skoda, and KGM.

Chery Chief Operating Officer Lucas Harris told Drive the current assurance period is servicing the customer needs of the brand.

“I think the reality is the average car ownership at the moment in Australia is around seven or eight years,” Harris said.

“I don’t think extending the warranty to 10 years is going to help any more confidence.

“We already have a market-leading warranty at seven years with no conditions, so you don’t have to service with us.

“We’d love you to [service with Chery, but] you don’t have to, we’re not going to hold a gun to your head.

“You don’t have to pay anything extra to get it, you’re not limited by distance – it’s just one simple warranty.”

While the 10-year warranties offered by MG, Nissan, and Mitsubishi are longer, they each require servicing from an authorised dealer or outlet to ‘extend’ the assurance period to the decade-long period.

These ‘conditional’ warranties mean owners cannot service their vehicles at independent mechanics lest they lose the assurance period time extension.

When asked directly if there were plans to boost the Chery warranty offering, Haris said: “I wouldn’t rule it out.”

“[But] it’s certainly not something that we’re actively considering,” Harris said.
