Do you and your partner share cars, or do you each have ‘assigned cars’? According to a viral social media post, one is more controversial than the other.
A viral meme has sparked a debate over the unique car-sharing habits of different households, with internet users divided over the idea of having ‘assigned cars’ for each family member.
“I just found out a married couple I know doesn’t have assigned cars,” reads the post, which was shared on X by user @BravesAshland and has since reappeared on Instagram.

“Like they have two cars… but one isn’t his and hers… they just wake up every morning and grab whatever set of keys and go?”
The seemingly innocuous observation inspired some passionate reactions from people shocked such an arrangement even exists.
“Might as well just sleep on random sides of the bed too,” one person wrote in a comment that has since received 1751 likes on Instagram.
“Are they lizard people?” another joked, while one person incredulously added “That’s anarchy waiting to happen”.
But for every person stunned over the arrangement, there was another who said they employ a similar car-sharing approach in their households.
“We have five cars at our home, and it is exactly like this, no designated cars. Sometimes we switch cars in the middle of the day,” one person shared.
“We take whatever car is easier to pull out of the driveway first, we both have keys to both our cars, and it’s easy and no fuss,” another said.
A quick poll of the Drive office revealed it’s a fairly even split between those with designated cars and those with shared vehicles.
The latter group tended to be parents of young kids, who kept child seats in certain cars. Others who didn’t observe the ‘assigned cars’ approach were those with difficult driveways or garages, who tended to grab whichever car was easiest to extract.
While ownership rights varied, some people said they paid for the cars out of joint funds. Additionally, others said that despite not being able to drive their partner’s car, they were often stuck refuelling and washing it.
We’d love to know if you and your partner are proponents of car-sharing or if you subscribe to the assigned car model. Let us know in the poll below.
