Overall safety is worth highlighting because the ID.4 achieved a full five-star rating when crash tested by Euro NCAP both in 2021 and when it was retested under tougher criteria in 2025.
Standard safety kit for all ID.4 versions includes adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking with cyclist and pedestrian detection, a driver fatigue alert system, dynamic road sign display and a lane-keep assist function.
However, while Euro NCAP’s testers are a happy bunch, it’s a different story with VW owners. The ID.4 didn’t appear in the 2026 Driver Power best cars to own list, but the brand wound up in a pretty meagre 26th out of 30 in the best manufacturer results. This placed Volkswagen far behind several rivals like Tesla (3rd), Vauxhall (6th), and Renault (9th). In fact, the only Volkswagen brand to perform even worse was Cupra in 27th place.
