• Used Peugeot 308 (Mk2, 2013-2021) review and buyer’s guide

    Used Peugeot 308 (Mk2, 2013-2021) review and buyer’s guide

The 308 is a light car, though, with the 1.5 BlueHDi 130 Active model weighing in at just 1,204kg. A few years ago, this is the kind of figure we would have associated with a supermini, and shows the lightweight efficiencies of the new PSA Peugeot-Citroen EMP2 platform that the 308 uses.

The styling does make it hard to take full advantage of the car’s slightly more compact size, though: the back window is narrow and the C-pillars thick, and both compromise rear visibility.

Leg room, head room & passenger space

The Peugeot is rather disappointing for passengers in the rear, as a result of its short length and focus on maximising boot space. The rear doors are big enough, but there could be more space between the front and rear seats; climbing aboard can be a bit tricky. Foot space isn’t great, either, and the low-set rear bench only adds to the tight feel inside.

Getting out can be a struggle, too, particularly if you have bigger feet, and this is one of the few family cars in which adults in the rear may be asking those in the front to slide their seats forward. At least headroom isn’t bad – unless you choose the panoramic roof, that is. That’s worth noting if you’re looking at Active models and above, as it’s a temptingly priced £500 option.

    Boot

On paper, the 308 has a very spacious boot, offering 470 litres with the seats up and 1,185 litres once they’re folded. But this is a little misleading, as the shape of the boot doesn’t quite allow owners to make full use of the space. This isn’t the estate-rivalling luggage bay the figures suggest.

The 308 does offer extra hidden space below the load area, which is handy, but it’s a pity this versatility hasn’t been extended to the interior. The glovebox is tiny and the armrest cubbyhole, normally a useful stowage space, is also cramped.

  • Vision Meta Turismo is a Kia EV8 of the future

Vision Meta Turismo is a Kia EV8 of the future

“It really helped shape the brand identity,” he said. “Over the last 10 to 15 years, Kia has consistently, model after model, improved quality, drivability, safety, and design. The Stinger was a kind of manifesto that showed what our brand could do. In an EV era, this is what we’d like to do.”

    Advertisement – Article continues below

While a production version of the Vision Meta Turismo concept would bring a different shape to the current Kia EV line-up, it does share some design language with the firm’s latest electric cars and reflects its ‘Opposites United’ philosophy.

Kia’s ‘Star Map’ lighting is prevalent at the front, although the positioning of the headlamps high up on the bonnet is an interesting move. The rear also has thin LED lighting structures – something we’ve seen before on the likes of the EV3, EV5 and EV9.

    Next-generation, driver focused cabin

We can certainly see an element of driver focus with the cabin layout – albeit one adapted for the digital age. The driver gets a bespoke seat along with a joystick control mixed with a yoke-style steering wheel. There’s also an augmented reality head-up display that shows virtual graphics “floating above the road” according to Kia.

“The interior designers came up with some amazing ideas,” Habib told us. “There is not one seat that is similar to another; the driving seat is like a gaming rig. We felt it was important to understand how younger generations perceive sports-car driving and how it is influenced by their digital experience.

Lynk & Co GT concept with 2.0s 0-100km/h claim is Chinese brand’s ‘Time to Shine’

As a 10th anniversary present to itself, Geely-owned Lynk & Co unveiled a stunning GT car with performance credentials to shake established rivals.

Chinese brand Lynk & Co has celebrated its 10th anniversary by revealing a stunning high-performance coupe at the Beijing motor show.

The official name for the concept is, awkwardly, ‘Time to Shine’ but it’ll be referred to herein as the Lynk & Co GT concept.

Lynk & Co refers to the coupe as “both a tribute and a statement of intent” for the brand, pointing to a possible production future.

The styling carries elements from 12-cylinder Ferraris, with hints of 599 in the long bonnet, a window line from the 812 Superfast, and a visor-like front end that gives a nod to the current 12Cilindri.

MORE: Lynk and Co cars from China coming to Australia with slightly less unfamiliar name

Powertrain specifics for the electric GT Concept were not released, but Lynk & Co claims the GT Concept can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 2.0 seconds, making it quicker than any production model so far.

The 2+2 coupe eschews the all-wheel drive layout usually associated with ultra-quick electrified vehicles, and instead sticks with a rear-wheel drive chassis.

Official information about the concept was packed with buzzwords, like ‘track-inspired chassis DNA’ and ‘AI-powered digital chassis’, with no real explanation of how these have been implemented in the GT Concept.

MORE: A flood of new Chinese car brands is nearing Australia – everything you need to know

The interior features a driver-centric cabin, and unlike other performance debuts at Beijing, no jumbo-sized centre screen.

Instead, two small instrument displays ahead of the driver relay key data, while a trio of smaller screens provide secondary info on the dashboard.

The majority of physical controls are grouped on the steering wheel as buttons, rocker switches, and dials, designed to promote intuitive operation without looking away from the road.

A prominent pair of wheel-mounted gearshift paddles is also included.

A performance driving mode, activated by pressing the yellow ‘+’ button on the console, lowers the GT Concept by 15mm, deploys active aero extensions at the front and rear of the car, adding 100mm of overall length, and raises the concealed rear wing.

Lynk & Co’s participation in touring car racing is touted as the inspiration for the GT Concept’s performance credentials.

The Lynk & Co brand is co-owned by Geely and Zeekr, which is itself wholly Geely-owned, and previously also had involvement from Volvo. The brand has launched in China and Europe, but has yet to be locked in for an Australian release.

Instead, Lynk & Co cars could be sold here under the already-established Zeekr brand.

  • Honda HR-V review | Auto Express

Honda HR-V review | Auto Express

Our opinion on the Honda HR-V

The Honda HR-V is a worthwhile option for buyers wanting a compact SUV that delivers great fuel economy and a useful amount of passenger space. It’s quite handsome, too, and an extensive list of standard safety kit and decent on-board tech further enhances its family car credentials. However, it’s more expensive than many of its closest rivals, and it has a relatively small boot for the class. Ultimately, it performs the basics well, but doesn’t do enough to outshine the best in a highly competitive section of the market.

    About the Honda HR-V

The Honda HR-V is now in its third generation, although you might struggle to remember the last version of this Japanese crossover. Yes, the old model was smart enough, with useful practicality and generous standard kit, but it suffered from a level of anonymity that never really allowed it to become a big hit with buyers.

    Advertisement – Article continues below

Honda has got the basics right with its latest HR-V: the exterior looks subtly stylish, while a peek inside reveals a simple and well-executed cabin design, with good build quality and a pleasing material fit and finish.

Elegance, Advance, Advance Style and Advance Style Plus make up the available trim levels, and buyers won’t have to spend any time wrangling over what power option to go for, because the HR-V is offered solely with a 1.5 i-MMD (Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive) full hybrid set-up. All models are front-wheel drive only, so there’s nothing to fret about there, either.

  • Big fuel theft rise is keeping petrol and diesel prices high for drivers

Big fuel theft rise is keeping petrol and diesel prices high for drivers

“This is not a victimless crime,” he continued. “When fuel is not paid for, the cost does not disappear, it is absorbed by the retailer and ultimately adds to the wider cost of running a forecourt.”

That said, Forecourt Eye, which works for roughly a quarter of all fuel stations in the UK, says that it has also noticed a “concerning rise” in the number of instances where criminals are stealing large quantities of fuel in one go, suggesting it’s being resold on the black market.

Michelle Henchoz, Forecourt Eye’s managing director, said: “The most alarming aspect is the method being used, with fuel being stored in plastic containers or improvised tanks inside vehicles, which is extremely dangerous. In the event of a collision, the consequences could be catastrophic, not just for those involved but for other road users as well.”

As of the time of writing, the average price of petrol and diesel sits around 157p and 190p per litre respectively – only around one to two pence down from its recent peak. The RAC’s head of policy, Simon Williams, sympathised with motorists, pointing out how drivers “understand retailers have had no option but to put prices up due to the cost of oil being so much higher, and they’re also suffering with fuel theft as widely reported this week. But as wholesale prices reduce so should forecourt prices.”

  • Geely reveals new hybrid tech claimed to be significantly more efficient and powerful than Toyota

Geely reveals new hybrid tech claimed to be significantly more efficient and powerful than Toyota

While Toyota has been a dominant player in the hybrid space for decades, Chinese car giant Geely wants to take the technological lead.

Geely has unveiled a new-generation hybrid powertrain technology at the 2026 Beijing motor show, which the car maker claims will set a new benchmark for efficiency.

Separate to the electric and plug-in hybrid powertrain offerings already seen in Geely vehicles, this new ‘i-HEV’ closed-loop hybrid system (similar to Toyota’s layout) utilises a high-efficiency petrol engine and AI-driven software to achieve what Geely says is record levels of fuel efficiency.

To that point, Geely has earned itself a Guniness World Record for the lowest level of fuel consumption from a mass-produced hybrid vehicle.

MORE: Geely reveals EVA Cab autonomous robotaxi to rival Tesla, launching 2027

Set during a highway loop in the Chinese city of Hunan, a Geely Emgrand hybrid sedan demonstrated a consumption figure of 2.22L/100km.

Using this new hybrid powertrain, the Geely Emgrand has a total system output of 230kW between a 1.5-litre petrol engine and electric motor.

Geely says the Emgrand i-HEV can accelerate under electric power up to 66km/h, and the petrol engine has a 48.1 per cent thermal efficiency rate.

While Geely has promised to continue expanding its portfolio of models for the Australian market, this particular Emgrand model is yet to be locked in.

  • Leapmotor C10 review | Auto Express

Leapmotor C10 review | Auto Express

The mapping is a nice design that feels pretty similar to Google’s offering, and there’s an app store that lets you add Spotify, for instance, but this still isn’t enough to make up for the lack of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto connectivity here.

Also similar to a smartphone is the pull-down menu with about a dozen shortcut buttons, which you can customise. However, we didn’t particularly enjoy using the climate control functions within the screen; physical buttons would be preferable.

    Advertisement – Article continues below

Leapmotor says it will roll out over-the-air updates for life on the C10, and we hope that one item high up in its list is a fix for the night mode setting. On too many occasions, the screen switches to dark, then back to light, depending on external factors (going under a tree can upset it, for example).

The 10.25-inch driver’s screen is configurable, but only for three different small readouts on one side, and the small font can make it hard to read things at a glance. The resolution of all screens is great, however.

Rear-seat space is exceptional, but this comes at the expense of boot space

    Pros

    • Spacious interior, with acres of legroom for rear-seat passengers
    • Panoramic sunroof fills the cabin with light
    • 34-litre ‘frunk’ under the bonnet is big enough for the charging cables

    Cons

    • Boot space is disappointing for a car of this size
    • No clever or practical features we would expect in a family SUV
    • Hardly any creature comforts for rear-seat passengers

When it comes to family cars, it’s not solely about the amount of space on offer. We like to see the little touches that will make everyday life easier for you and your loved ones, such as the umbrella that Skoda hides in the driver’s door of the Enyaq and Elroq, or the rather aptly named ‘ingenious rear armrest’ with built-in smartphone and tablet holders that you get in the Renault Scenic. But aside from ‘silicone leather’ seat upholstery, which should be easier to clean, the Leapmotor C10 lacks clever, practical features.

    Dimensions and size

The Leapmotor C10 measures 4,739mm long, with a wheelbase of 2,825mm, and it’s 1,900mm wide and 1,680mm high. That means it’s larger than the already sizable Skoda Enyaq, and is almost the same as the Tesla Model Y, yet it offers significantly less boot space than either, or even some small SUVs.

    Dimensions comparison
Model Leapmotor C10 Skoda Enyaq Renault Scenic
    Length 4,739mm 4,658mm 4,470mm
    Width  1,900mm 1,879mm 1,864mm
    Height 1,680mm 1,622mm 1,572mm
    Wheelbase 2,825mm 2,766mm 2,785mm
    Boot space

    435 litres (EV)

    400 litres (REEV)

    585 litres 545 litres

    Seats & passenger space

There’s a good amount of adjustment in the driver’s seat and the steering wheel, but for some reason, you cannot lower the front passenger seat. It’s not the biggest problem in the world, because your passenger simply gets a lofty view of the road ahead.

  • Renault EV growth gathers pace as high petrol prices tempt buyers to electric cars

Renault EV growth gathers pace as high petrol prices tempt buyers to electric cars

Renault has seen its electric car sales grow by over 40% so far this year, with the geopolitical issues in the middle east likely to increase the pace of change, according to the brand.

The French manufacturer is Europe’s number two for electric car sales, and the huge impact of the retro Renault 5, as well as the addition of the Renault 4, has driven the 7.2 percentage point jump in Renault’s EV numbers, which now account for 23.9% of its new car sales.

And that could ramp up further thanks to the ongoing rise in petrol prices caused by recent conflicts. “We see petrol is under price pressure and it’s having a huge effect on people all over the world,” said Renault global sales and operations director Ivan Seagal. “There is a push in the direction of electrified cars, we are starting to see it in orders in the short term, and if this situation continues we will have an acceleration in that direction.”

    Advertisement – Article continues below

Overall, Renault Group recorded more than 546,000 sales in the first quarter of 2026, down 3.3% versus Q1 2025 thanks to weather conditions disrupting Dacia deliveries in January. Outside of Europe, Renault recorded huge growth in India – up 47.6% even before the launch of the new Renault Duster – the rebranded local market version of the Dacia model.

  • Freelander 8 revealed as Chinese-made electrified reboot of Land Rover SUV

Freelander 8 revealed as Chinese-made electrified reboot of Land Rover SUV

A storied Land Rover badge is coming back on a Chinese car co-developed with Chery, powered by electric and range-extender hybrid drivetrains.

The Land Rover Freelander has returned 25 years after the launch of the original on a new SUV brand half-owned by Chinese car giant Chery, due in Australian showrooms in 2027.

After the debut of a concept in recent weeks, the revived Freelander marque has revealed a “production-intent model” of its first road car, the seven-seat Freelander 8, at an event in China distinct from the ongoing Beijing motor show.

Freelander is a joint-venture between Chery and Land Rover, spun off to sit outside of both marques’ regular line-ups, and planned to spawn six models in three years, focused on hybrid and electric power.

Australian arrivals are due sometime in 2027, with local testing to occur in the meantime.

MORE: Freelander joins Jaecoo, Omoda, and Lepas under Chery Australia umbrella

The Freelander 8 may look small, but overseas reports indicate it is 5.1 metres long – greater than a Toyota Prado or Land Rover Defender 110 – with six seats spread across three rows.

Design details such as the signature triangular rear quarter window pay tribute to the original Freelander of the late 1990s, with the geometric headlights a nod to the facelifted 2004 version.

Chery has not published photos of the cabin, but images captured at the car’s reveal show a slim display stretching across the width of the cabin, plus a large infotainment touchscreen, and physical switches below.

There are second-row ‘zero gravity’ seats, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 processor for the screen that also runs the car’s safety systems, including lane-centring assist and automatic parking in car parks from a phone app.

MORE: Land Rover Freelander to return as new China-developed and built electric-car range

Few technical details have been confirmed, but the Freelander 8 reportedly shares technology with the T1X platform under Chery’s current range of family SUVs.

Battery-electric, plug-in hybrid and range-extender (REEV) – where the petrol engine is used solely as a generator to keep the batteries powering the electric motors that drive the wheels – options will be offered.

The range-extender will use a new “all-terrain-specific” battery pack claimed to charge at up to 360kW, and is fitted with underbody protection.

Off-road technology in lieu of traditional locking differentials includes a limited-slip rear differential with a “virtual centre lock”, and dual-chamber air suspension.

MORE: Chery reveals solid-state battery tech rated for beyond 1500km EV driving range

A new i-ATS all-terrain drive-mode system appears similar in concept to Land Rover’s Terrain Response, switching between nine modes and reacting to surface changes in real time.

The Freelander 8 will be produced by Chery at its joint-venture factory with Jaguar Land Rover in Changshu, north-west of Shanghai, with the British firm focusing on the design of the car.

Freelander says 1000 prototypes will be deployed globally, including in Australia, to prepare the vehicle for a global launch starting in the Middle East, ahead of Australia in 2027.

  • Used BMW 5 Series (Mk7, 2017-2024) review and buyer’s guide

Used BMW 5 Series (Mk7, 2017-2024) review and buyer’s guide

If you want to upgrade the sound system, you can select the Harman Kardon option for £820. There’s a Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround sound system, although this costs an eye-watering £4,220.

    Practicality, comfort and boot space

Given that the BMW 5 Series has grown in nearly every external dimension, it’s no surprise to find its bigger inside. In fact, it now comfortably matches the Audi A6 and Mercedes E-Class for space, and edges ahead of the Jaguar XF.

Boot capacity has increased, too – although close class benchmarking means it offers no real advantage over its immediate rivals in this regard. Yet if buyers want more luggage space, then there’s always the 5 Series Touring estate version.

Access to the cabin is straightforward thanks to wide-opening doors, and once inside there’s bags of head and legroom for rear seat passengers. It’s a similar story up front, where the driver gets a wide range of seat and wheel adjustment.

Like all BMW models, the driver’s seat can be set low, placing you at the heart of the action. The standard seats also offer plenty of support, particularly over long distances. M Sport models get more heavily bolstered sports items, while if you want a heating function for both the front and rear seats you’ll have to tick the optional Comfort Plus Pack.

    Legroom, headroom and passenger space

You’d expect an executive saloon to be roomy and comfortable – and the 5 Series doesn’t disappoint. By stretching the whole car by 36mm, BMW engineers have liberated extra legroom, particularly for those sitting in the back. There’s enough space for even tall passengers to stretch out in comfort, while the rear bench is wide enough for three adults – although the large transmission tunnel means those sitting in the middle don’t have much room for their feet. Up front, the amount of space is equally generous. There’s also a wide range of seat adjustment, particularly for the driver.

    Boot

BMW has boosted the carrying capacity of the 5 Series, but the 10-litre increase to 530 litres isn’t much to write home about. What’s more, it trails the 540-litre figures claimed by the Mercedes E-Class and Jaguar XF.

Go for the 530e or 545e plug-in hybrids however, and you’ll sacrifice 120 litres of space. That’s a fair chunk, although the Mercedes E 350e suffers to a larger extent, losing 140 litres over its conventionally-powered petrol and diesel siblings.

Still, the load bay is reasonably well shaped in all versions, while the opening is wide. There is a pair of handy cubbies behind each wheel arch, plus some storage beneath the boot floor. The split/fold rear seat further aids versatility.
